Why punycode?
DNS originally only knows letters without accents, digits and the hyphen. Internationalised domain names (IDN) are therefore converted using a fixed procedure: müller.de becomes xn--mller-kva.de. Browsers usually display the readable form, but configuration files, certificates and some mail servers need the ASCII form.
We apply the current UTS #46 rules. We also check whether a name contains characters that look confusingly similar to Latin letters – such as a Cyrillic “а”. Such names are popular for phishing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I register domains with umlauts?
Yes, with most extensions, including .de, .com and .eu. At 1blu business GmbH you register IDN domains just like any other domain.
Does the converter work for email addresses too?
It only converts the domain part. Special characters before the @ cannot be converted to punycode; that requires the mail server to support SMTPUTF8.
Domains and DNS in good hands
1blu business GmbH looks after domains, DNS and mail servers for companies, agencies and resellers – with dedicated contacts instead of a call centre.
