What matters in a certificate
A certificate has to meet three conditions: it must be issued for exactly the name being visited, it must be valid at the current time and it must lead back to a recognised certificate authority through an unbroken chain. If any of these is missing, browsers show a warning and many visitors leave.
A common mistake is an incomplete chain: the server only sends its own certificate, not the intermediate certificate. Some browsers compensate for this, other programs do not. The “certificate chain” list shows what the server actually sends.
Frequently asked questions
How long are certificates valid?
Public certificates are valid for a little over a year at most today, many for only 90 days – and the permitted lifetime is being shortened further step by step. Automatic renewal is therefore essential. We warn when fewer than 14 days are left.
Why is it called SSL when TLS is used?
SSL is the old name of the protocol and has stuck in everyday language. Today only TLS 1.2 and TLS 1.3 are considered secure.
