Traceroute: trace the network path

On their way through the internet, data pass through many routers. Traceroute makes these hops visible and helps you see where a connection slows down or breaks off.

How traceroute works

Each packet carries a counter that drops by one at every router. When it reaches zero, the router discards the packet and reports back to the sender. Traceroute sends packets with counter 1, 2, 3 and so on, and thereby learns one by one which routers are on the path and how fast they respond.

Asterisks mean that a router did not answer – this is often intentional and not an error. What matters is from which hop the times jump or no more answers come back. For security reasons we show internal hops of our own network without their address.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I see the way back?

Traceroute only measures the outbound path. The return path may run through other networks; it would need a measurement from the other side.

How many hops are checked?

At most 30 – enough for practically every target. We send exactly one probe per hop and wait up to two seconds for the answer.
